Send e-mail to phloem@fumbling.com
This address is pretty much guaranteed to never change, and will always reach me. For the vast majority of people who want or need to reach me, this is the fastest and -- from my perspective -- the most convenient way to get in touch with me.
Note: I get anywhere from 300 to 450 pieces of e-mail a day, and so I have to make use of extensive filtering based on subjects, senders, and a few other metrics I'd rather not talk about publicly. My e-mail address has also been pretty much spammed across the Internet, so I aggressively filter all incoming mail. Unfortunately, this means if you're writing to me for the first time and the chips fall in the wrong place, my software might accidentally nuke your message.
Because of the high volume of mail I get, I can't always reply to e-mail in as timely a fashion as I would like. Rest assured that it did get read, and you probably will get a response -- eventually. Time-sensitive material should be sent well in advance of deadlines, if at all possible. Unless you work for/with me, I probably won't drop everything I'm doing to answer a query by e-mail.
Bottom line: If you need to get in touch with me, and it's not about something that needs to happen right now, e-mail is what you should send.
The Next Fastest Way: The Phone
In order from most convenient to least convenient:
Voice line at home: +1-250-592-5500
Pager: +1-250-388-1742
Cellular/Voice mail: +1-250-888-6812
Fax machine: +1-250-595-5943
Of the three, the voice line is probably the one most useful the majority of people, particularly if you don't know where I am. Messages get checked and forwarded as appropriate. My pager is with me more or less continously, but doesn't work as well as I'd like it to, and doesn't work at all when I'm not in southwestern British Columbia.
Periodically, I get e-mail from people who stumble across this information and want to know why I have it available to the public. "People could stalk you!" they say, I guess on the theory that would-be stalkers don't have access to phone books.
If you need to mail me something, or courier a package to me, or want to send anthrax-laden letters, drop me a note by e-mail first.
Esoterica
I've built myself a little e-mail to fax gateway. Send me e-mail asking about its address if you want to test it out.
Message my phone (abuse this and I'll break your legs).
